GATE is Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering
- 1984 : IISC Bangalore started GATE for admissions in IISC and IITs
- 1991 : Gate exam conducted as conventional and multiple choice questions
- 2003 : Started multiple choice questions only
- 2005 : Mathematics introduced in all Gate papers
- 2009 : Started 100 marks question papers
- 2010 : General aptitude introduced in all Gate papers
- 2012 : Final year graduates also allowed to apply and write the Gate exam
- 2013 : Female candidates exempted from application fee
- 2014 :Introduced numerical answer questions,
Started examinations for all the papers by an ONLINE Computer Based Test (CBT),
Multiple paper set for CE, CS, EC, EE, ME branches
- 2016 : Syllabus changed, updated with latest topics
- 2017 : A New Section had been introduced in the Engineering Sciences (XE) Paper. This section was the Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (section H).
International students from countries namely Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia and United Arab Emirates were eligible to apply for GATE 2017.
- 2018 : GATE 2018 held in international cities- Addis Ababa, Colombo, Dhaka, Kathmandu, Dubai and Singapore.
- 2019 : GATE 2019 introduced a new paper "Statistics" with a code of "ST".
